Cobra ESD-7000 Radar Detectors

 

 

The Cobra ESD-7000 Radar Detector is a basic, yet functionally competent design. Though recently discontinued and replaced by 9110 as the base model detector by Cobra, the 7000 remains a strong seller in the used and new-for-sale market segments. Consumer reviews indicate the 7000 gives “90% of the value of the 9110 for 60% of the price.”

The 7000-series is well known to be strong in detecting through a full 360 degrees the K and Ka bands used by most older police radar guns, but may be a bit weak on the X/Laser bands.

It is known as particularly effective against the Spectre 1 and Laser 360 radar gun employed in many rural areas. This may be something to bear in mind for anyone considering the 7000, as its ‘city’ mode is notorious for false alarms.

Since most agencies using laser utilize the ‘instant-on’ type (against which no radar detector offers protection) the issue of the 7000’s dubious laser capability may be academic, but remains a constant in consumer reviews nonetheless.

 

The Cobra’s VG2 (Radar-detector Detector) notifications are reportedly touch-and-go, as some report VG2 warnings coming too late or not at all. (Typically, those warnings are received before any other, since VG2 signals are more powerful.)

Though not free of its share of so-so reviews, The Cobra ESD-7000 is generally regarded as a good buy for the money, if not a bullet-proof cop-spoiler. It may be best thought of as the Toyota Camry of Radar detectors; functional, easy-to-use, and reliable, but not fancy or likely to draw envious stares.

Much like the Camry, anyone’s grandmother could operate the Cobra; the LED’s are bright, and the tone is more than loud enough to serve notice to hit the brakes…NOW.
